A tiny district called Lasem, located in
Central Java’s Rembang regency, is the unlikely home to a number of rich
cultural and historical heritages. Civilizations from different eras –
ranging from the pre-historic to the Majapahit kingdom, the Pajang and
Demak Sultanate and the Dutch Colonials- have shaped the complex and
colorful history of Central Java’s Lasem district.
One of the tangible forms of heritage to be found here is in the deteriorating old buildings. Many of the district’s ancient houses are influenced by Chinese and Northern coast Javanese style.
