Old tomb inside Kauman Lasem mosque: Aside
from tourists interested in history, pilgrims make up the other bulk of
Lasem visitors. This area played an important role in the introduction
of Islamic culture to the Javanese. There are plenty of old tombs of
Muslim scholars here, including one inside the Kauman Lasem mosque.

All About LASEM
Admiral’s tomb: Lasem is home to four
tombs, each with its own character. Curiously, no one has been able to
read the Chinese characters written on the tombstone up to this day. The
tombs, located in the backyard of the Candu House, seem to emit a
slightly mystical vibe. Photo by Fahmi Anhar.
A Photo Story: Heritage Buildings of Lasem
A tiny district called Lasem, located in
Central Java’s Rembang regency, is the unlikely home to a number of rich
cultural and historical heritages. Civilizations from different eras –
ranging from the pre-historic to the Majapahit kingdom, the Pajang and
Demak Sultanate and the Dutch Colonials- have shaped the complex and
colorful history of Central Java’s Lasem district.
